James Swan, United Nations Special Envoy to Somalia, is scheduled to visit Puntland for a series of meetings to discuss the elections impasse in the country.
Swan travels to Puntland’s capital of Garowe on January 21.
Somalia is currently in the middle of a crisis that threatens its ability to hold elections, which are due in January and February 2021.
While in Puntland, Swan would meet with President Said Abdullahi Deni, the elected leader of the semiautonomous state.
For months, the opposition has called for dialogue with the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS).
However, the government continues to maintain a hard stance regarding dialogue.
Swan’s visit to Puntland comes a few days after he was in Southwest State where he met with President Abdiaziz Hassan Lafta-Gareen and other stakeholders.
