UN Special Envoy Travels to Kismayo for Elections Talk

United Nations Special Envoy to Somalia has traveled to Kismayo, the capital of Jubbaland state, to discuss elections impasse with President Ahmed Islam Madobe.

James Swan, the UN Special Envoy to Somalia, arrived in Kismayo on January 31.

The UN Special Envoy is on the final leg of his tour of the Federal Member States (FMS) to discuss the electoral crisis with regional state leaders.

Over the last couple of weeks, Special Envoy Swan has been traveling around the country for meetings designed to discuss and find solutions for the ongoing electoral crisis.

Upon arriving in Kismayo, Deputy President Mohamed Adan of Jubbaland State led a delegation of senior officers from the local administration to welcome Swan to the region.

Together with Puntland, Jubbaland administration has one of President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo’s most prominent critics.

However, last week the two regions showed willingness to compromise some of its demands after appointing a list of representatives to the Federal Electoral Implementation Team (FEIT).

Swan has already visited Southwest, HirShabelle, Galmudug, and Puntland states.

His trip to Jubbaland is the final one.

During his trips and discussions with regional leaders, he has already convinced the leadership of Puntland and Jubbaland to commit themselves to take part in the upcoming elections.
