The United Nations has contributed US$17 million towards Somalia’s humanitarian response appeal.
Somalia has suffered failed rains for three consecutive periods for the first time in three decades.
With this new development, the UN has now contributed US$52 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) in 2021.
The funds are in addition to the roughly US$60 million that international partners have donated to the Somalia Humanitarian Fund (SHF).
While announcing the donation, the UN said that the funds would assist over 5.5 vulnerable Somalis in the country.
Martin Griffiths, the UN Humanitarian Chief, said that donors must release the funds immediately to avert humanitarian catastrophe.
