UN Officially Transfers Secure Facility to Galmudug State

Dhusamareb, Somalia – The United Nations (UN) has transferred a fortified compound in Dhusamareb, the administrative capital of Galmudug state in Somalia, as the organization prepares to conclude its political mission in the country.

The UN constructed an office for its staff there but intends to end operations at the facility by late December 2026. The facility has been accepted by Galmudug’s regional administration under Ahmed Abdi Kariye Qoorqoor.

UN representative James Swan stated that the UN had built and equipped the compound for operations in Galmudug.

“However, due to the United Nations’ financial constraints and the planned closure of the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia in October 2026 at the request of the Federal Government of Somalia, this facility will now be handed over to the Government of the State of Galmudug for its use,” he explained.

He further noted that the spirit of UN solidarity and support for Galmudug’s people matters as much as the physical structure itself.

Swan indicated that the premises would assist Galmudug authorities in advancing peace, stability, security, and development, emphasizing that UN support extends beyond a mere location.

Additionally, the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) will provide training to Galmudug technicians on the compound’s power, water, and security systems until year’s end, prior to withdrawing its experts.

Dhusamareb serves as a key political and security center in central Somalia, with officials noting the compound can accommodate state institutions, visiting delegations, and security discussions in a secure setting.
Multiple missions are concluding in Somalia even as state-building efforts have slowed recently while President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud gears up for national elections, though persistent insecurity remains unresolved.
