UNESCO Reviews Mogadishu Heritage Sites for Restoration

Mogadishu, Somalia – From May 24 to 30, 2025, United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), with support from ALIPH, conducted a technical assessment of key historic sites in Somalia’s capital, including the Lido Secondo Lighthouse and the Old Mogadishu district.

The expert review focused on evaluating recent structural damage and identifying culturally significant elements vital to shaping future restoration plans.

This initiative seeks to safeguard Mogadishu’s rich historical heritage and strengthen its candidacy for UNESCO World Heritage status.

By preserving these landmarks, the project aims to ensure the sustainable management and protection of Mogadishu’s cultural legacy for future generations.
