United Nations to Leave Somalia Waters

United Nations (UN) vessels and personnel are getting ready to leave Somalia waters.

Last week, UN Security Council (UNSC) agreed to extend its stay in the region for only three more months.

UNSC voted to deploy international troops in the region to eradicate incidences of piracy that had made the waters around Somalia unsafe.

On December 11, UNSC again voted to leave the region.

UNSC noted that there had not been any successful hijacking for ransom or piracy in the area since March 2017.

Therefore, UNSC commended the broad naval coalition that had eliminated piracy.

Somali representatives spoke at the UNSC session.

In their address, they highlighted the success enjoyed in eradicating piracy and making the area safe too.

The Somali representatives agreed that time had come for UN to leave the area.
