AMISOM has praised the United States for the role it played in liberating Janale, a Somali town that has been under the control of Al-Shabaab for almost 10 years.
In the last decade, Al-Shabaab captured and used Janale, an agricultural-rich town, to recruit and train locals.
It also used the town to raise taxes. The extremist group then used the taxes to foot its operations around the country and the entire Horn of Africa region.
Several AFRICOM officials have hailed the United States military for conducting an operation that had no civilian casualty.
In the past, the US has faced heavy criticisms for the deaths of civilians during its operations against Al-Shabaab all over Somalia.
AFRICOM’s Director of Operations, Maj. Gen. William Gayler, said, “We will not give up on our commitment to eradicate Al-Shabaab from Somalia and the Horn of Africa region.”
US troops worked closely with Danab Special Forces to kick Al-Shabaab out of Janale. The US is responsible for training members of Danab Special Forces.
