UNSC Extends AMISOM’s Mandate

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has extended the mandate of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

AMISOM’s forces were first deployed in Somalia in 2007.

It was established as a brainchild of both United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU).

On February 26, UNSC met to discuss several issues pertaining to Somalia.

During their deliberations, member countries approved the proposal regarding the extension of AMISOM’s mandate.

The United Kingdom issued a statement confirming that AMISOM’s mandate has now been officially extended.

AMISOM, which has a force of nearly 20,000 troops, seeks to build Somalia’s capacity for maintaining peace, law, and development.
