The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has extended the arms embargo on Somalia.
Members of the UNSC voted on Thursday, November 18 to extend Somalia’s arms embargo.
They took this decision despite the valiant efforts of the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) to convince the UNSC to lift the embargo.
Ambassador Abukar Osman, Somalia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, delivered a keynote speech to the UNSC on this issue.
UNSC said that the arms embargo remains necessary because Al-Shabaab terrorists remain active in Somalia thus threatening the peace and stability of the region.
Members of the UNSC voted 11-0 for extending the arms embargo.
Some of the members abstained as a show of support for the Somali government. They included Ghana, Gabon, China, and Russia.
