UNSC to Discuss Electoral Crisis in Somalia on February 9

United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is scheduled to discuss the ongoing political and electoral crisis in Somalia.

On February 8, diplomatic sources in New York stated that the Security Council plans to meet and discuss the ongoing situation in Somalia.

Last week, the National Consultative Conference ended in Dhusamareb without any agreement on elections.

Britain has requested the UNSC to meet behind closed doors to discuss the situation that is currently developing in the East African nation.

The need for the meeting comes amid reports that opposition leaders in Somalia have called President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo “an illegitimate leader.”

Their decision to refer to Farmaajo as an “illegitimate leader” follows the expiry of his term as the President of Somalia on February 8 at midnight.

Farmaajo’s term ended without a clear path towards presidential elections.

Somalia has also been unable to hold parliamentary elections, which should have taken place in December 2020.
