UNSC to Vote on Somalia’s Arms Embargo

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will vote on the Somalia arms embargo.

UNSC meets on Friday to vote on the issue.

The arms embargo against Somalia has stood since 1992. UNSC imposed the embargo following the deadly civil war that rocked the East African nation in 1991.

The 15-member UNSC will adopt one of the two resolutions regarding the arms embargo.

One of the resolutions recommends removal of the embargo while the other would see the UNSC reimpose an embargo on Al-Shabaab.

Last month, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud told the country that the embargo would be lifted in December 2023.
