United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) has expressed concern over the events that took place on the night of February 18 in Mogadishu.
On Thursday night, gunshots were heard near Maida Hotel where two prominent opposition leaders were staying.
Hassan Sheikh Mohamed and Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, two former Somali presidents, opted to spend the night at Maida Hotel on the eve of the opposition rally.
Apparently, their security guards fought with government troops.
Government troops were in the area. The hotel is only a short distance away from the presidential palace in Mogadishu.
UNSOM issued a statement on Friday saying that it was “deeply concerned” by last night’s events.
In its statement, UNSOM called for calm and restraint by the concerned parties.
UNSOM also reiterated the need for Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS) to meet and reach a political agreement soon before the situation worsens.
