UNSOM Hails Somalia’s Latest Anti-Corruption Measures

United Nations in Somalia (UNSOM) has hailed the latest anti-corruption measures that the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has put in place.

President Mohamed Abdulahi Farmaajo’s administration has approved the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS), which is designed to eradicate corruption in the country.

Furthermore, NACS is also responsible for strengthening the integrity of all government institutions in the Horn of African nation.

UNSOM expressed its delight at the news that NACS also intends to create a more professional civil service where merit and competency is prioritized.

Additionally, FGS also announced intentions to not only join but also be signatory to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC).

Globally, UNCAC remains the only legally binding anti-corruption instrument while playing a key role in sustaining, managing, and tracking the fight against corruption in all countries.

James Swan, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Somalia, said, “We commend the commitment the government demonstrated in fighting corruption.”

“We also hope that the new measures would promote fair access to opportunities and resources around the country,” Swan reiterated.

UNSOM has guaranteed its unwavering support in the government’s efforts to implement NACS successfully and the process involved in ratifying the UNCAC.
