US Airstrike Hits ISIS-Somalia in Puntland

Bossaso, Somalia — The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) on Saturday confirmed that it had conducted an airstrike targeting ISIS-Somalia militants southeast of Bossaso, in Puntland State, on June 15, 2025. The operation was carried out in coordination with the Somali Federal Government, AFRICOM said in a statement.

According to AFRICOM, the airstrike was intended to degrade ISIS-Somalia’s operational capabilities in the region, a key stronghold for the group.

“The precision strike successfully disrupted ISIS-Somalia’s plans,” AFRICOM noted, without providing further details on casualties or assets destroyed, citing the need to protect ongoing efforts.

Both AFRICOM and Somali authorities have previously partnered on counterterrorism operations in Puntland, where ISIS and Al-Shabaab continue to pose serious threats.

Analysts say that sustained aerial operations aim to prevent the resurgence of terror networks that seek to destabilize Somalia and its neighbors.

While no specifics were given on the strike’s outcome, AFRICOM assured that it will continue to work alongside Somali forces to bolster regional security and support long-term stability.

The Somali government has yet to issue its own official statement on the operation.
