US Applies Visa Restrictions on Somali Officials Responsible for Delayed Elections

The United States government has applied visa restrictions on Somali officials responsible for delaying the House of the People elections.

Antony Blinken, the Secretary of State, announced the visa restrictions in a press statement released on February 25.

Initially, Somalia was to conclude all Lower House elections by February 25.

This week, Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble led the National Consultative Council (NCC) into extending the deadline to March 15.

While announcing the restrictions on the officials responsible for the delay, Secretary of State Blinked said, “There is no clear plan to conclude the electoral process.”

However, he never mentioned the officials and individuals affected by the restrictions.
