Ilhan Omar, the Somali-born United States Congresswoman, has called upon President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo to leave office.
Congresswoman Omar made this declaration on December 28.
She was speaking after a day of increasingly acrimonious relationship between President Farmaajo and Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble.
Late on Sunday, President Farmaajo announced that he had suspended Roble from office.
Farmaajo even instructed soldiers allied to him to block Roble from accessing the Office of the Prime Minister.
Omar now wants Farmaajo to step aside and allow Somalis to chart a new way forward.
Congresswoman Omar reminded Farmaajo that his term expired in February 2021.
Her comments represent the first time that a senior US leader has asked Farmaajo to leave office.
