US Drone Attacks Kill 8 Al-Shabaab Fighters in Southern Somalia

Al-Shabaab fighters continue to suffer huge losses in Southern Somalia despite years of domination in the region.

The latest drone attacks by the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) have killed eight Al-Shabaab militants.

AFRICOM said that the US military carried out three drone attacks on Sunday. The attacks mostly targeted militia in Mubarak.

The AFRICOM team announced that there were no civilian casualties in the attacks.

However, Amnesty International continues to voice its concerns with the airstrikes, which it blamed for injuring and killing many civilians, including farmers.

AFRICOM’s latest attack brings to 36 the number of airstrikes the US military has waged against members of the extremist group.

It also represents the highest number of airstrikes by the US military against any militants anywhere in the world surpassing those carried out in Syria and Iraq.

Moreover, AFRICOM’s attacks against Al-Shabaab have seen it kill 45 of the Al-Qaeda linked militants.

AFRICOM’s Deputy Director of Operations, Brig. Gen. Miguel Castellanos, says the military assistance seconded to Somalia and other African countries is essential for improving security.

He stated that the US is interested in helping the continent to improve the capacity and expertise of its military.
