The United States Embassy in Somalia has confirmed meeting President Said Abdullahi Deni and President Ahmed Madobe of Puntland and Jubbaland respectively in Mogadishu.
According to a press release from the Embassy, the meeting took place in Mogadishu on Wednesday, September 2.
Deni and Madobe are in Mogadishu for scheduled talks with President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo of the Federal Government of Somalia on the country’s upcoming polls.
While confirming the meeting, the Embassy called the two leaders “statesmen” worth relying on to finalize details on Dhusamareb III agreement.
The statement is quite different from the one issued a week ago by Donald Yamamoto, the US Ambassador to Somalia, when he called the two leaders “spoilers.”
Various leaders in Somalia condemned the Yamamoto for his sentiments a week ago.
In today’s meeting, the US Embassy urged the leaders to demonstrate the “wisdom, consensus, and compromise” the country needs to prepare for elections later this year.
