GAROWE, Puntland – US forces have carried out their first ground operation in the Baalade mountains of Puntland, targeting ISIS militants, according to a report.
The operation on Tuesday started with an MQ-9 Reaper drone striking caves sheltering ISIS members. This was followed by around 10 combat helicopters that engaged ISIS fighters in a prolonged assault.
The report indicated that the raid killed senior ISIS members and led to the capture of other militants.
The United States, with more than 100 special operations personnel already in Puntland, plans to deploy over a thousand additional special forces to the Al-Miskaad mountain range. This major reinforcement highlights the strategic priority the US assigns to the area.
The action represents a significant increase in direct US military engagement in the region, emphasizing the global aspect of the fight against ISIS affiliates in Somalia and the emphasis on securing Puntland.
