The United States military has confirmed that it killed an Al-Shabaab leader with its airstrike carried out on October 1.
US Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed the incident in a press release issued on Monday.
In the statement, AFRICOM said that it carried out the airstrike in conjunction with the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS).
It added that the precision airstrike was near Jilib, a town that is roughly 370kms to the southwest of Mogadishu.
This confirmation ties in with the recent report by the Somali National Army (SNA) that its operation led to the killing of Abdullahi Nadir Yare, an Al-Shabaab co-founder.
The statement by AFRICOM did not mention the Al-Shabaab leader by name, though.
