US Military to Issue Report Allaying Fears Its Airstrikes Cause Civilian Casualties

AFRICOM has promised that it will issue a report to allay fears that the airstrikes it has been carrying out in Somalia to decimate Al-Shabaab are killing civilians.

The United States military has been under intense pressure from Amnesty International and other human rights activists to publish true reports.

AFRICOM has promised to issue a first quarterly report soon to address those concerns.

The US military has attacked Al-Shabaab severally around the country, especially in areas that the Al-Qaeda linked extremist group dominates.

Thus far, the attacks have killed over 40 Al-Shabaab militants.

Amnesty International has accused AFRICOM of “maliciously targeting” Somali civilians in the guise of fighting the militants.

Deprose Muchena, Amnesty International’s Director for East and Southern Africa, accused AFRICOM of “failure to admit that its airstrikes killed and injuring civilians.”

AFRICOM’s Commander, Gen. Stephen Townsend, issued a statement saying that his team continues to review the capability of CIVCAS in tracking, assessing, and reporting casualties.
