The United States Senate has passed the Somaliland Partnership Act.
With the passage of this critical piece of legislation, the US Department of State now has to report any engagement with Somaliland to Congress.
Furthermore, the Department of State has to carry out a feasibility study on how the US can establish a partnership with Somaliland.
The State Department is to conduct the study together with the Secretary of Defense.
Senator Jim Risch, Senator Chris Van Hollen, and Senator Mike Rounds confirmed this latest development on June 11.
They urged the US to explore any potentially mutually beneficial partnership with other partners such as Somaliland.
The passage of the Somaliland Partnership Act is crucial for the breakaway region.
For decades, Somaliland has sought international recognition without much success.
