US to Restore Funding to Somalia to Boost the Fight against Al-Shabaab

On Wednesday, the United States announced that it would restore funding to the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) to boost the fight against Al-Shabaab in the country.

Somalia’s Southern Region has been a hotbed of Al-Shabaab activities.

In 2017, the United States government ceased all security funding to Somalia over corruption claims. However, it now notes that the situation has improved considerably.

FGS has improved the country’s public financial management policies. Consequently, Somali National Army (SNA) now manages its finances properly without any hint of corrupt deals.

Washington issued a statement in Mogadishu confirming that it had resumed all security-related funding to FGS to support all counter-terrorism efforts.

Furthermore, Washington requested President Mohamed Farmaajo’s government to continue prioritizing reforms in the security sector.

The US says the reforms provide the only means for building and sustaining security forces that are not only capable but also professional and fully accountable.
