The United States, through its embassy in Somalia, has urged President Mohamed Farmaajo to demonstrate leadership as political tensions increase in the country.
Further, the statement issued from the US Embassy in Somalia, also hinted at growing frustrations over the lack of commitment for the upcoming polls.
Additionally, the embassy called on President Farmaajo to meet with the leaders of the Federal Member States (FMS).
On Tuesday, the United States said that plans for the upcoming polls, which are to take place in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, must be discussed.
In its statement, the embassy said, “FGS and FMS need to start engaging and cooperating urgently to resolve the political tensions that seem to be on the rise around the country.”
In October this year, Somalis would be electing their new parliamentarians before returning to the polls in February 2021 to elect their president.
Despite the tight schedules involved, the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) has not announced election dates.
The Federal Parliament has also been unable to thrash out contentious issues found in the Elections Act.
