US Urges Somali Leaders to Remain in Mogadishu Until They Sign Elections Agreement

The United States has ramped up the pressure on Somali leaders to sign elections agreement as soon as possible.

On March 21, the US Embassy in Somalia wrote a communiqué to the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS) leaders.

In the communiqué, the US Embassy reminded the leaders “the people of Somalia want elections now.”

Consequently, it suggested that the leaders should remain in Mogadishu where a fresh round of talks between FGS and FMS is expected to kick off any time soon.

It directed the communiqué to Puntland’s President Said Abdullahi Deni, Jubbaland’s President Ahmed Islam Madobe, and HirShabelle’s President Ali Guudlaawe.

Others urged not to leave Mogadishu until a polls agreement is signed are Southwest’s President Abdiaziz Laftagareen and Galmudug’s President Ahmed Abdi Qoorqoor.

The US Embassy reminded these regional state leaders that failure is not an option.

Somalia has been unable to hold parliamentary and presidential polls that were scheduled for December 2020 and February 2021 respectively.
