US Warns Airliners Not to Fly over Kenya for Fear of Al-Shabaab Attacks

United States has warned civilian airliners to avoid flying over Kenyan airspace because of possible attacks by Al-Shabaab.

According to the US, Al-Shabaab is capable of launching ground-to-air missiles at aircraft flying low.

A report by the US shows that Al-Shabaab is capable of targeting aircraft flying as low as 25,000ft.

The warning to US airliners and US-registered aircraft was issued by the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA).

The warning is likely to hit Kenya hard by creating uncertainty.

It is worth noting that the aviation industry in the region, not just in Kenya, continues to reel under the burden brought on it by the COVID-19 pandemic.

With this warning, the industry could take time before picking up again.

FAA issued this warning to airliners and aircraft plying the Nairobi to Far East route.

Consequently, planes flying to countries such as China, India, and Dubai are likely to be affected the most.
