A humanitarian response appeal worth US$1.46 billion was launched for Somalia on December 20.
Adam Abdelmoula, the Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Somalia, launched the appeal on Monday.
Abdelmoula appealed to all Somalia’s international partners to contribute to the appeal, which is set to benefit over 5.5 million of the most vulnerable Somalis in the country.
The humanitarian response appeal follows the announcement by various organizations that Somalia is at risk of an unimaginable humanitarian crisis from the ongoing drought.
Women, children, and the elderly are the groups that feel most threatened by the drought.
Recently, the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) declared a drought emergency.
The government did so after the country suffered three consecutive failed rainy seasons.
Abdelmoula, who is also the Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, indicated that 3.2 million Somalis face severe food, water, and pasture shortages by December 31, 2021.
