A veteran female Somaliland journalist was laid to rest on January 16 in Hargeisa.
Shukri Harir Ismail was laid to rest the same day she passed away in Somaliland’s capital city.
Ismail leaves behind a legacy of establishing community based organizations (CBOs) that played a crucial role in advocating for the rights of women and children in the breakaway nation.
Harir is also one of the most easily recognized faces in the media industry having worked as a journalist at a time when the country had few women journalists, if any.
Abdillahi Abokor, Somaliland’s Minister of Roads Development, led mourners in laying Ismail to rest.
Omar Mohamed Farah, the Director of Somaliland News Agency (SOLNA) also paid glowing tributes to the deceased.
Ismail joined the media fraternity close to four decades ago.
She never quit the media even after curving for herself a career in the field of CBOs by being among the first in the country to start one.
