Veteran Somaliland Journalist and Women Rights Advocate Dies

A veteran journalist in Somaliland who also advocated for the rights of women in her country has died.

Reports from the breakaway region of Somaliland indicate that Shukri Harir Ismail lost her life on January 17.

Ismail has been correctly hailed as one of the pioneering women journalists in Somaliland.

She has been celebrated for opening the doors and acting as an inspiration for subsequent generations of female journalists in Somaliland.

Ismail ran the Women Action for Advocacy and Progress Organization (WAAPO), which fought for the rights of women and young girls.

She fought valiantly for the protection of women and children in Somaliland.

It is not yet clear what caused her death. Details on her interment also remain sketchy now though this is expected to become much clearer in the next few days.
