Vietnamese government has urged Somalia and international partners to reach “political consensus” over the ongoing elections crisis in the country.
Nguyen Phuong Tra, Vietnam’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said this while addressing a session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
In her address to the UN, Tra expressed her hope that the East African nation would work closely with other member states to arrive at a political consensus.
According to Tra, political parties and leaders in the Horn of Africa region need to work together to determine the exact date for elections.
Somalia is already behind schedule.
It was to hold parliamentary elections in December 2020 before the Federal Interim Elections Team (FEIT) postponed these to January 2021.
Now, with only a few days remaining to the end of January, it is unclear whether Somalia would hold the parliamentary polls.
The Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN also said that political consensus in Somalia would help the nation to find solutions for other existing challenges.
