Las Anod, Somalia – The Federal Government of Somalia on Wednesday formally launched voter registration in Las Anod, a move described as a milestone in advancing political participation and strengthening the country’s federal governance system.
The ceremony was presided over by Ali Yusuf Ali Hosh, Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation, who emphasized that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that citizens across all regions have the right to participate in upcoming elections.
“Today marks a new chapter for the people of Las Anod. Voter registration is not only about elections, but about inclusion, representation, and stability,” Hosh said during the launch.
Officials noted that the registration exercise is being carried out in cooperation with local authorities, security agencies, and community leaders to guarantee transparency and accessibility. The program will record eligible voters ahead of scheduled regional and national polls, providing a foundation for credible elections.
Las Anod, located in the Northeastern State of Somalia, has in recent years experienced political and security tensions. Federal officials believe the rollout of voter registration will help restore confidence in governance and provide citizens with a stronger voice in shaping their political future.
Observers say the process is part of broader reforms championed by Mogadishu to extend state institutions, improve democratic participation, and foster reconciliation across contested regions.
The Interior Ministry confirmed that the registration centers will remain open for several weeks, with mobile teams deployed to reach remote communities. Awareness campaigns are also underway to encourage women, youth, and marginalized groups to take part in the process.
