Somaliland Vice President Abdirahman Saylici recently called on Egypt to refrain from interfering in the country’s internal affairs and its ongoing disputes with Somalia.
Saylici issued a statement on Tuesday hitting out at Egypt for throwing its weight behind Somalia.
Egypt has come out strongly to oppose the agreement that Somaliland and Ethiopia signed earlier this year.
Vice President Saylici emphasized that Somaliland considers itself a separate, self-governing entity that declared independence from Somalia in 1991, even though it has not gained international recognition.
He called on Egypt to focus on the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Sudan.
The VP’s remarks follow recent statements by Egyptian officials, who have expressed support for Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity.
Egypt’s position has been viewed by Somaliland as an intrusion into its sovereign matters. Saylici urged Egypt and other countries to respect Somaliland’s autonomy and its quest for international recognition.
This development highlights the complexities and sensitivities in the Horn of Africa, where regional and international dynamics often play a significant role in local conflicts and political issues.
