“Wadajiir Nabadeed” Project Launched to Boost Security in Newly Recovered Somali Regions

Mogadishu, Somalia – A new initiative, Wadajiir Nabadeed – which translates to “Together for Peace” – was officially launched in Mogadishu, marking a major step toward reconciliation, stability, and development in Somalia’s newly recovered territories.

The project, spearheaded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Somalia and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), is being implemented in close partnership with the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation (MoIFAR), the Ministry of Internal Security (MoIS), and the Ministry of Justice (MoJ).

Targeting Hirshabelle and Galmudug states, Wadajiir Nabadeed will focus on strengthening local governance structures, enhancing security, and promoting restorative justice systems that address community needs. By combining government-led action with grassroots engagement, the initiative aims to foster trust between citizens and authorities while creating sustainable development pathways in post-conflict areas.

“This project embodies our national commitment to reconciliation and stabilization,” officials from MoIFAR noted, emphasizing that the approach brings security, governance, and development “hand in hand” to ensure lasting peace.

In addition to bolstering law enforcement and justice mechanisms, Wadajiir Nabadeed will work with local leaders, civil society, and communities to build inclusive decision-making processes, expand access to basic services, and support socio-economic recovery.

UNDP Somalia representatives stressed that the project’s name reflects its purpose—building a Somalia where trust, justice, and security form the foundation of a peaceful future.

The launch comes at a critical time, as Somalia continues to secure liberated territories from extremist groups and address the underlying governance and social challenges that fuel instability. By embedding peacebuilding into local governance and justice systems, Wadajiir Nabadeed seeks to ensure that newly recovered areas do not relapse into conflict.
