Watchdog Accuses Somalia of Shutting Down the Internet

NetBlocks, an Internet observatory organization, has accused the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) of shutting down Internet services in the country.

According to NetBlocks, the government took this measure on Saturday after the Federal Parliament opted to remove Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire from office.

The organization said most of the shutdown took place in Mogadishu.

Further, it indicated that national connectivity levels have dropped to as low as 30 percent compared to the normal levels.

Consequently, this has affected the coverage of newsworthy events thus keeping Somalis in the dark for two days.

NetBlocks observed that the shutdown has affected both fixed-line and cellular networks.

Moreover, the decision has affected citizens who rely on Internet services to access their mobile money across the nation.
