Weapons Seized by US Navy along Somalia’s Coastline

The United States Navy captured tons of weapons along the coastline of Somalia from two dhows on February 11-12.

The ownership of the dhows remains a mystery, though.

US Navy also never issued any statement providing details of the identities of the smugglers.

Normally, such dhows are labeled or covered with painting, symbols, or flag of the country from which they originate.

A statement from the US Navy said that personnel from the USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG 81) boarded the stateless dhows on Thursday and Friday.

In the process, the navy officers “interdicted an illegal shipment of weapons as well as weapon components,” the statement read.

Although US government withdrew its military from Somalia, it continues to carry out operations in the region.

The fact that Somalia is one of the main hubs of illegal smuggling of weapons also encourages the US to carry out similar operations in and around the Horn of African nation.
