Wednesday’s Mogadishu Meeting between Deni, Madobe, and Farmaajo Called Off

The meeting that was to take place on Wednesday evening between Said Abdullahi Deni, Ahmed Islam Madobe, and President Mohamed Farmaajo failed to take off.

The three leaders were scheduled to meet in Mogadishu on September 2 to discuss issues around the upcoming elections in Somalia.

Multiple sources said the meeting was called off when Jubbaland’s President Madobe asked the Federal Government of Somalia to withdraw its troops from the Gedo region.

Additionally, both Madobe and Puntland’s President Deni demanded the inclusion of the other three Federal Member States’ leaders at the Mogadishu talks.

Madobe and Deni both skipped the recently concluded Dhusamareb III talks.

HirShabelle’s President Mohamed Abdi Waare, Galmudug’s President Ahmed Abdi Kariye, and Southwest’s President Abdiaziz Mohamed Lafta-Gareen were all at the Dhusamareb III.

Farmaajo and Mogadishu’s Mayor Omar Muhamoud Finnish also showed up in Dhusamareb.

The latest setback is likely to thrown spanner into the works of the efforts to agree on electoral model that appeals to all stakeholders in Somalia.
