WFP Hails Enactment of Safeguarding Humanitarian Assistance Law in Southwest State

The World Food Programme (WFP) has celebrated the signing of a new law by Somalia’s Southwest State aimed at safeguarding humanitarian aid. This legislation is a significant step forward in ensuring that vital assistance reaches those who need it most, particularly in regions affected by conflict, food insecurity, and other crises.

Southwest President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen signed the Safeguarding Humanitarian Assistance Law over the weekend.

The law underscores the importance of strong leadership and collaboration between humanitarian organizations and local governments. By legally protecting humanitarian aid, it helps to prevent obstruction, theft, or misuse of resources, which can often hinder relief efforts in fragile contexts.

WFP’s recognition of this law highlights the critical role of legal frameworks in enabling effective humanitarian operations. It also reflects the ongoing commitment of both WFP and local authorities to prioritize the needs of vulnerable populations, ensuring that aid can be delivered safely and efficiently.

This development is particularly important in Southwest, where tons of people rely on humanitarian assistance for survival. By strengthening the legal protections for aid delivery, this law contributes to building a more resilient and secure environment for both aid workers and beneficiaries.
