WHO Lauds Somali Health Workers for Leading the Fight against Polio

The World Health Organization (WHO) has lauded health workers in Somalia for the role they play in the fight against polio in the country.

On Monday, the organization said that it would mark the World Polio Day by celebrating Somalia’s health workers.

October 24 is celebrated globally as the World Polio Day.

The theme for this year’s World Polio Day is “A win against polio is a win for global health.”

This year’s World Polio Day was celebrated on Saturday. The global health organization opted to celebrate polio workers in Somalia for their commitment to this fight.

It said that the workers deserve all the accolades for demonstrating commitment to not only reach but also immunize every child.

Hundreds of workers have helped to midwife the fight against polio in the East African nation.

Somalia launched its polio eradication campaign in 1997.

This year, the workers have worked overtime because of the triple threats of COVD-19 pandemic, locust invasion, intense rains, and incessant floods.

Despite all that, they have not slowed down.
