The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced plans to seek funding to support victims of the recent Cyclone Gati in Somalia.
In November 22, 2020, Cyclone Gati made a landfall in Somalia.
Its impact was felt mostly in Puntland where it caused deaths and damaged property and assets of untold value.
In WHO’s estimates, Somalis affected by the cyclone need more than US$1.2 million.
The global health body says that the funds would mostly go into implementing intervention measures to help those affected directly by Cyclone Gati in Puntland.
On the evening of January 7, WHO issued a statement that said people unable to access healthcare would be able to do so once the funds are in place.
The lack of sanitation would also be addressed as WHO seeks, obtains, and uses the funds appropriately.
Without the funds, the organization said that Somalia would experience a surge in certain types of diseases, including measles and diarrhea.
The global health organization seeks to reach over 101,000 people, which roughly represents 84 percent of the population affected by the cyclone.
