A non-governmental organization known as Youth Volunteers for Development and Environment Conversation (YOVENCO) has expressed disgust and sadness at the recent rape of Awo Harir, which it described as “horrific.”
In a press statement, YOVENCO condemned the cowardly act, which it mentioned has been on the increase among Somalia communities. It castigated the fact that many similar incidences go unreported for various reasons, which include cultural taboo.
Awo Harir, a 13-year old girl, was recently raped at Hargeisa Orphanage Center in Somaliland. Reports indicate that a group of young men had been raping Awo for several months. Her disabled father said authorities at the center have attempted to cover it up.
Awo’s father said he took his daughter to the center because he is blind while his wife is mentally ill. Consequently, they were unable to take care of their children. All the three children have been at Hargeisa Orphanage Center.
YOVENCO expresses disgust at the thought that Awo and her siblings are not “safe” and “well looked after” as their parents originally hoped. YOVENCO now demands justice for Awo and her family.
