10 Women Elected Senators in Four Somalia Regional States

Ten women were elected the newest members of the Upper House in senatorial elections conducted in three Federal Member States (FMS).

In Galmudug, where senatorial polls took place on August 12, two women won their elections.

Consequently, they join the other eight who had already been elected in elections held in Jubaland, Southwest, and Puntland.

Thus far, only Puntland has held elections for all its Upper House seats.

The other regional states are yet to finalize their elections. Therefore, more women could find their way to the Upper House.

In May 2021, politicians and other stakeholders agreed to pursue the 30 percent women representation in parliament.

Regional states seem to have embraced this by setting aside specific seats for women-only candidates.
