A New Chapter in Somali Diplomacy as Abdisalam Takes Office as Foreign Minister

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre presided over a formal handover ceremony in Mogadishu as Abdisalam Ali (Alu), former Second Deputy Prime Minister, officially assumed office as Somalia’s 33rd Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Saturday’s ceremony marks a significant transition in the country’s foreign policy leadership, as Abdisalam succeeds Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, who now serves as the Federal Minister of Defense.

The appointment of Abdisalam comes at a critical time for Somalia, amid evolving regional dynamics and pressing diplomatic challenges, including maritime security, regional integration, and strategic partnerships. With his extensive background in governance and public service, Abdisalam is expected to bring a renewed focus to Somalia’s international relations and advance the country’s foreign policy priorities.

Prime Minister Barre commended both Fiqi for his dedicated service and Abdisalam for stepping into this vital role. The ceremony symbolized a peaceful and institutional transfer of responsibility, underscoring the government’s commitment to continuity, stability, and the strengthening of Somalia’s global presence.
