A Mogadishu-based nurse has succumbed to the deadly COVID-19 only five days after being admitted to Martini Hospital.
Authorities have identified the nurse as Zamzam Ali.
She has become the first healthcare professional in Somalia to die of the virulent disease that has killed thousands of frontline workers around the world.
Ali died on Sunday at the only isolation facility in the country.
She had tested positive after undergoing several tests to confirm her status before being rushed to Martini where she eventually died.
According to details provided by her family, Ali worked for the Ministry of Health and at Kalkaal Specialty Hospital, a facility where she also served as a consultant.
