At the request of the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) conducted a collective self-defense airstrike targeting ISIS-Somalia militants on April 18, 2025. The operation took place approximately 50 kilometers southeast of Bosasso, Puntland Statr, in an area known for terrorist activity.
Initial assessments indicate the strike successfully neutralized several ISIS-Somalia fighters and destroyed key logistical assets, disrupting the group’s ability to conduct operations in the region. No civilian casualties were reported as a result of the operation.
This strike underscores the continued partnership between the U.S. and Somalia in countering violent extremist organizations. AFRICOM remains committed to supporting Somali forces in their efforts to degrade terrorist threats and enhance regional security.
ISIS-Somalia, an affiliate of the Islamic State, has maintained a persistent presence in Puntland’s rugged terrain, using the area as a base for attacks against Somali security forces and civilians. The Federal Government of Somalia has repeatedly called for international support in combating the group’s expansion.
AFRICOM continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as appropriately.
