Gen. Stephen Townsend, the Commander of US African Command (AFRICOM) has said the organization will be relocating its headquarters from Stuttgart in Germany.
By doing that, AFRICOM would also be moving around 1,500 of its troops from Germany.
Gen. Townsend said the decision has been made but logistics have not been finalized it. He said the organization is likely to take several months to plan the logistics and make a final decision.
However, he clarified that the new headquarters are unlikely to be in Africa.
A statement from Gen. Townsend indicates that AFRICOM is likely to give priority to locations in Europe and the United States before considering other options, including Africa.
Nevertheless, Gen. Townsend assured AFRICOM’s partners in Africa of the organization’s dedication and commitment to them.
Townsend expressed his gratitude – and that of everyone at AFRICOM – to Germany for hosting the organization’s headquarters since its creation in 2008.
