An Al-Shabaab inmate escaped from Mogadishu Central Prison on Monday evening in a daring attempt that shocked the entire country.
Mukhtaar Ibrahim Idle was identified as the lone inmate who managed to escape.
His colleagues were among the 19 people confirmed dead in yesterday’s deadly attempt by Al-Shabaab inmates to escape from prison.
According to authorities, Idle joined Al-Shabaab in 2012.
Mostly, he was based in Galgala before moving on to Barawe after gaining more experience and earning the trust of senior Al-Shabaab operatives.
Idle was arrested in 2014 in Elasha Biyaha before being charged for terrorism.
The court found him guilty of terrorism and sentenced him to 10 years in prison.
However, yesterday he made a successful attempt to escape prison. While fleeing, Idle killed two civilians to add to the other prison guards he killed with his colleagues.
The government has launched a manhunt for the fugitive.
