Al-Shabaab militants seized the strategic village of Abooreey, located approximately 30 km north of Buuloburte in Somalia’s Hiraan province, on Sunday night. This village is notably rich in livestock, making it a valuable asset in the region.
Somali legislator Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu stated that this move is part of Al-Shabaab’s strategy to relocate fighters trapped in Galmudug after unsuccessful attempts to cross through the Middle Shabelle region. He urged the federal government to enhance efforts to counter this new strategy by providing military support, supplies, and conducting airstrikes to assist the local population.
This development follows a series of confrontations between Somali forces and Al-Shabaab in the Hiraan region. In early February 2025, Somali Federal Forces, in collaboration with local militias, launched successful operations against Al-Shabaab militants along the Shabelle River, targeting villages around Halgan and Buula Burte. General Sahal Abdullahi Omar emphasized the government’s commitment to eradicating Al-Shabaab from Somali territory.
Additionally, in late January 2025, the Somali army killed 16 Al-Shabaab terrorists in the eastern part of the Hiraan region, capturing several strategic locations. The army stated that these operations aim to fully liberate Somalia from extremist groups and ensure lasting peace and security for its citizens.
Despite these efforts, Al-Shabaab has continued to launch attacks in the region. In March 2025, the group attacked villages in the Lower Shabelle region, targeting government military posts in Aboorey and Beeryabaale. Local clan forces and military personnel attempted to repel the attackers, resulting in casualties on both sides.
The seizure of Abooreey underscores the persistent threat posed by Al-Shabaab in Somalia and highlights the need for continued and enhanced efforts by the Somali government and its partners to combat the group’s activities.
