On Wednesday, Al-Shabaab selected its own COVID-19 committee, as calls for ceasefire increasingly grow louder.
Al-Shabaab announced that its committee would comprise seven members, whose mandate is to combat the spread of COVID-19 in the country.
The Al-Qaeda linked group announced that its committee features intellectuals, doctors, and religious scholars who would all work together to contain COVID-19.
Further, the extremist group said the committee’s immediate mandate is to “devise strategies and solutions” to institute instantaneously to curb the spread of the virulent disease.
Al-Shabaab made the appointment during a meeting convened by the group’s top echelons. Its leadership approved the seven-member list unanimously.
Nevertheless, Al-Shabaab is yet to divulge the identities of the seven people who make up the committee.
Somalia’s COVID-19 cases have surged to over 1,219, according to details issued by the country’s Ministry of Health.
