Al-Shabaab Using Missiles from North Korea in Somalia

Al-Shabaab has been accused of using missiles from North Korea in the recent attack its militants carried out in a United Nations compound in Somalia.

The UN Panel of Experts discovered that the militia group used North Korean missiles in its attack in the UN compound earlier this year.

Consequently, the Panel of Experts believes that the group could have signed an arms deal with North Korea.

Such a deal would be a direct contravention of international standards.

Between February and May this year, the group carried out six deadly attacks at Halane Base Camp, a heavily fortified UN property near the Aden Adde International Airport.

In a Panel of Experts report, unexploded mortar rounds were discovered in the region.

According to the report, the unexploded mortar rounds are consistent with military weapons manufactured in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

It is unclear how the Al-Qaeda linked group managed to get its hands on the North Korean-made missiles.
