Almost 1 million Somalis affected by drought live in areas that are under the control of Al-Shabaab terrorists.
The United Nations made this announcement on October 26.
James Swan, the UN Special Representative to Somalia, said that the number of people experiencing drought yet living in Al-Shabaab areas is a cause for concern.
Swan said this during a media briefing held on Wednesday.
However, he insisted that the UN, international partners, and the Somali government would work hard to help those in Al-Shabaab-controlled areas.
In his view, the 1 million is a “relatively small number” in a country where more than 7 million people are affected by the ongoing drought.
Historically, Al-Shabaab has always been hostile to aid efforts in Somalia.
